Computer forensics investigators use their skills to identify the evidence you need to prove your case by analyzing evidence including, lost bits of information; looking for data trails, email correspondence, viewing and collecting time & date stamps and organizing evidence found in report form.

Data mappingData mapping is one of the first steps your organization will need to first undertake in order to get their arms around the organization’s data universe. Some of the items to consider when developing a data map are:
A detailed description of computer systems
How are computers networked?
Who has outside access to the network?
Are employees allowed to work from home?
Backup processes, are they managed locally or remotely?
Third party vendors who support your organization
Litigation Holds -
Once you have identified where the data is located and your retention polices are in place, you are now ready to setup your litigation hold notification plan. Notifying the organization that litigation is lurking on the horizon should be an automated process. In house counsel and outside counsel should be involved with the process. One thing that should be considered is how the data is going to be collected. Who will gather the data? Will your organization’s I.T. group do the work or will an outside vendor who specializes in this type of work perform the data gathering.
